What do you need to be a Doula?

Maybe you've been reading about doula work thinking, "This sounds incredible, but I'm not sure I'm the doula type." Maybe you're not particularly "earth mother." Maybe you're not anti-hospital. Maybe you're quite practical and straightforward rather than deeply spiritual. Maybe you've never done yoga or meditation in your life. Maybe you're more likely to offer a cup of tea than pull out essential oils. Maybe you have never birthed a baby. Maybe you're genuinely worried you don't fit the stereotype of who becomes a doula.

If any of this resonates, I need you to know something important: you're exactly the kind of person who could be an absolutely brilliant doula. Because what matters is honestly very simple!

The Doula in you cares deeply about how families experience pregnancy, birth and the early days with their baby. You believe parents deserve information, respect and support as they make decisions about their own bodies and their own journeys.

You have probably already been doing this in some way for years without realising it. You might be the person friends call when they need someone to really listen. The one who asks questions, advocates, notices when someone needs support and steps in with calm and care. Who just sometimes shows up without being asked.

Sometimes the path into doula work begins with a powerful personal experience of birth. Sometimes it comes from supporting a friend through pregnancy or postpartum. And sometimes it’s simply the feeling that families deserve to be better supported than they often are.

And once that feeling lands, it can be quite hard to ignore!

Doula work is heart-led work, but it is also skilled work. With the right training, guidance and community around you, that instinct to care and advocate can grow into something incredibly powerful, for you and the families you support.

One thing does help though… being completely obsessed with birth and all it brings, so if this does feel like you and you want more information about what life as a Doula can actually look like including earning potential, first steps and how to begin download our brochure below.

Can you really earn a living as a Doula?

Yes. You absolutely can!

Many doulas build thriving, sustainable businesses supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the early days with their baby. In many parts of the UK, birth doulas charge anywhere between £1,500 and £5,000 per family, depending on location and the support they offer.

This can already create a solid and meaningful income doing work that genuinely matters.

Of course, like any self-employed path, it doesn’t happen by accident. The biggest investment when you begin isn’t money, it’s time and intention. The doulas who build successful practices are the ones who treat it like a real business from the beginning. They show up, they connect with families, they talk about their work, and they keep going even when it feels a little outside their comfort zone.

And that’s exactly where we support you.

Inside our training you won’t just learn how to be an excellent doula. We guide you through the practical side of building your work too finding clients, setting your fees, creating clear boundaries, and growing a doula practice that is sustainable for your life and your family. We are so passionate about supporting you as you support families.

We take this work very seriously and all of our Doula mentors run their own busy successful Doulas businesses supporting clients day in day out. We are obsessed!
